If Joe Namath and almost every health insurer in the Land are practically begging you to join a Medicare Advantage plan why are you not suspicious about enrolling in one?

If you or a loved one are nearing eligibility for Medicare benefits, enrolling in a Medicare Advantage (MA) plan almost certainly will arise as an option. Most MA plans offer “all-in-one” coverage that combines medical and prescription benefits

Often lost in the seduction of $0 premium MA plans and added benefits that may not be covered by traditional Medicare are MA’s harsh realities of restricted physician choice and greater out of pocket costs.  Worse, when these realities become apparent, health insurers may not allow you to drop your MA plan and instead enroll in a Medigap supplement and a Medicare Part D prescription plan.   For a more extensive discussion, click here to see recent correspondence to a client who was considering enrolling in a MA plan.

While MA plans have improved over the years, federal legislation may be required to address these and other ongoing problems with the product.  Click here to see a recent communication to my Congresswoman.

My strongest advice is to consult with a knowledgeable health insurance professional about your Medicare options.  You want someone who will do a deep dive into your health care needs and asks questions you never contemplated.  If this discussion is limited to premium rates, you probably are with the wrong professional.
